I’ve noticed his name links to a website (traingeek), which is the source of comments we have received urging us also to promote Rail Europe UK. I happen to have a lot of time for the folk at Rail Europe UK, and I simply cannot imagine they have authorised Mark Serran (aka Steve) to make these kind of interventions on their behalf.

Looking at traveling across Europe by train I have found Rail Europe to be a great resource, as they offer the most extensive range of tickets throughout Europe.

The freight line you saw isn’t a part of the historic Hejaz line – it runs east-west, from the phosphate mines near Shidiya past Rum to Aqaba port. Makes for a good photo-op though!

The Hejaz Railway instead ran north-south: from Ma’an it continued south past Batn Al-Ghul to what is now the Jordan-Saudi border at Mudawwara – i.e. a LONG way east of Rum and Aqaba. And yes, it is now totally out of commission, pending construction of a totally new Jordanian rail network, which may or may transpire…
